No certainty yet about president`s planned visit to Europe

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - There is as yet no certainty about President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono`s planned visit to Europe as he is still waiting for the European Union`s decision on whether or not it will lift its ban on Indonesian airline flights to Europe next month, a presidential spokesman said.

The President wanted the planned talks between the EU and Indonesian aviation authorities to make progress so that the ban could be lifted, Dino Patti Djalal said at the presidential office here on Thursday.

"Hopefully, the EU will make up its mind in February," he said.

A EU delegation is expected to visit Indonesia later this month for talks on airline flight safety with local aviation authorities.

Tranportation Minister Jusman Syafii Djamal said last month the talks would be of significance as the EU was continuing to ban Indonesian airlines from flying in its air space.

The EU ban had upset Indonesia as it suggested the EU did not respect the opinion of Indonesian aviation authorities on the safety standards of national airlines, he said.

He added it was not proper for the EU to issue such a ban as Indonesian airlines were not operating in Europe.

Dino said the President`s planned European visit would be discussed soon after the EU had lifted the ban.

The President decided last year to visit Paris for a UNESCO conference. But he put off the visit after the EU banned Indonesian airlines from flying to European destinations following a spate of air accidents in Indonesia.(*)
