Lee Kuan Yew Visits Soeharto


Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Singapore`s former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew on Sunday afternoon visited former president Soeharto who is now under intensive medical treatment at Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta.

On his arrival at the hospital at about 11.45 am, Lee was welcomed by the hospital`s acting president director Djoko Sanjoto who brought Singapore`s former prime minister to a room where Soeharto is being treated.

Soeharto and Lee are closed friends known as figures who had strengthened the Association of South East Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Early 2006, Lee visited the Indonesian second president at the latter`s residence on Cendana Street, Central Jakarta, and they met again in July, 2007.

Till Saturday (Jan 12) night, Soeharto`s health was still unstable but showed better condition after he underwent critical health situation on Friday (Jan 11) when the Presidential Medical Team said Soeharto was suffering from heart, lung, kidney and brain failure.(*)

Lee Kuan Yew prays for Soeharto`s recovery

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Singapore`s former prime minister Lee Kuan Yew visited Indonesia`s former president Soeharto at Pertamina Hospital here on Sunday to specially pray for the latter`s recuperation.

During his 15-minute visit to Pertamina, Lee was accompanied by Singapore`s Ambassador to Indonesia Ashok Mirpuri, Indonesia`s former minister/state secretary Moerdiono and the hospital`s acting president director Djoko Sanjoto.

Lee was received by members of Soeharto`s family including Siti Hardiyanti Rukmana, Siti Hediati Hariyadi and Siti Hutami Endang Adiningsih.

"On his visit, former prime minister Lee offered sympathy and prayed for Soeharto`s convalescence," Moerdiono told newsmen.

He said Lee visited his pal who was still unconscious as a ventilator was applied on the New Order leader.

After visiting Soeharto, Lee directly returned to Singapore.
