Muslims perform various events to celebrate first of Muharram

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - Indonesian Muslims in various regions including Vice President Jusuf Kalla in Jakarta performed "Zikir" (praising Almighty God) as part of events in a bid to celebrate the 1st of the Muharram Islamic New Year 1429 H.

Jusuf Kalla along with noted figures of the Golkar Party and the Indonesian Islamic Religious Propagation Council, performed the prayers at his official residence in Jakarta. Jusuf Kalla is also general chairman of the Golkar Party Executive Board.

The "zikir" program, led by preacher Moamar ZA, was carried out on Wednesday evening, on the eve of the first of Muharram.

In Bogor city, thousands of Muslims gathered in the city`s grand mosque for reading the Al-Quran which was attended by Diani Budiarto, the mayor of Bogor.

Diani on the occasion said the religious service was among other things aimed at strengthening Islamic brotherhood and worship ofo Allah (Almighty God).

In addition, some 5,000 Muslims in the rainy city of Bogor (about 60 km south of Jakarta) also conducted the so-called 5-km Muharram procession.

Meanwhile, thousands of Muslims in Lebak district, Banten province, including Mulyadi Jayabaya, Lebak district head also carried out religious rituals.

The mayor expressed hope that this new year`s activity should be used for an introspection.

Apart from that, Muhammadiyah (Islamic) youth group in Medan, North Sumatra province on the Islamic new Year`s eve called on the the country`s Muslims never to commit corruption.(*)
