Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Indonesian government granted sentence reduction to 7,828 Christian inmates across Indonesia in conjunction with the Christmas celebration 2007, an official of the ministry for justice and human rights said on Tuesday.

Thanks to the remission, some 312 of them were immediately released from the jail while the others have to stay for their remaining imprisonment period, acting Director General for Penitentiary Muhammad Sueb said.

The sentence reduction, he added, varied from two days to two months.

Those granted with 15-day sentence reduction are 2,670 inmates, one month-reduction are 4,371 inmates, one-month-and-15-day reduction are 565 inmates and two months are 222 inmates.

He said inmates who got sentence reduction were those showing good behavior during the past six months.
